Beryl Muhammad was born and educated in England.  She grew up in a strict, disciplined, one parent home in London with her mother who is from Jamaica in the West Indies.  It was her father, also from Jamaica, who encouraged her to pursue her dreams of teaching after many years of working in an office as a Personal Assistant.  She returned to being a student, and graduated from the College of North East London with a degree in teaching.

Committed to the field of teaching, she started a new business called “New Minds Learning Center” and began tutoring students in her home.  Later, she was asked to teach in a private school by a parent, who was also the principal, after witnessing her ability to motivate her students.  She cultivated a structured environment conducive to nurturing the students’ esteem and character.  She was later promoted to head of the department.

After a lengthy long distance relationship, Beryl made the decision to move to the United States to marry, and continue teaching under the New Minds Learning Center business name. She has been a professional educator for over 15 years.  While living and tutoring in the U.S, Beryl has successfully led her students to graduation level incorporating the English language and also teaching mathematical concepts for the NY State tests.  She stays current in theories and practices that help her reach all her students.  She says, “To be successful, a teacher must get to know his or her students as individuals and teach them according to their own individual needs.  In order to teach well, we as educators must be reading constantly, as well as researching, rethinking and refining.”

In addition to her teaching degree, Beryl also holds a degree in American Sign Language (ASL) and a degree in English literature. She is able to communicate with the Deaf community and will be starting sign language classes soon to help others become fluent in a second language.

Currently, Beryl lives in Jamaica, Queens with her husband Clifton Muhammad and their 3 children.
